Fitch Improves Congo's Credit Rating: Statement

The global credit rating agency upgraded the Republic of Congo's long-term local-currency rating to "CCC+" from "CCC" and affirmed at "CCC+" its foreign-currency rating.

Key factors behind the upgrade:

🟠Government debt is expected to fall to 80.9% of GDP in 2026 from 92.1% at the end of 2025, supported by fiscal surpluses and strong nominal growth.

🟠Domestic debt payments were reduced to 9% of GDP from peaks of 13-14% in previous years, improving borrowing terms and lowering the risk of another default.

🟠A new IMF program was requested in April 2026, with an agreement expected by year‑end, which could unlock further support.

🟠GDP growth is projected to rebound to 4.3% in 2026, driven by rising oil and gas production.

ℹ Both "CCC" and "CCC+" ratings mean the country is considered highly vulnerable and faces substantial credit risk, with "CCC+" indicating slightly less vulnerability.
