BRICS is expanding its footprint in Africa, but are young Africans getting a meaningful role in shaping the bloc’s future? In this Nnete Fela Show Raymond Matlala, CEO and Chairperson of the South African BRICS Youth Association joins to talk about the need for young people to have a meaningful voice in BRICS decision-making.
We explore what BRICS means for Africa’s young people and whether youth participation goes beyond summits, conferences and photo opportunities.
The conversation examines the BRICS Youth Council, Africa’s growing representation through South Africa, Egypt and Ethiopia, and the role of partner countries such as Nigeria and Uganda.
Matlala also discusses the need for greater coordination among African youth and why young people should be occupying strategic positions across the bloc.
“We want young people to start participating and contributing meaningfully into BRICS […] We talking about a number of things that really would change the lives of ordinary citizens of our countries and who have got the innovative ideas. It's young people,” Matlala says.
The discussion also looks at efforts to build greater understanding of BRICS among young South Africans, including new education, capacity-building and innovation programmes.
With South Africa set to assume the BRICS presidency again in 2028, the question is clear.
Will Africa’s youth be meaningful contributors to the BRICS agenda?
