Three More South African Towns Lose Colonial-Era Names: Media
The towns in the Eastern Cape province will be renamed to honor local traditional leaders as part of an ongoing state-supported program, according to local media reports.
The changes are as follows:
🟠Lady Grey → Inkosi Makhobeni;
🟠Sterkspruit → Inkosi Mpangazi;
🟠Herschel → Inkosi Lihlongo.
Opponents argue that the renaming wastes public money, divides communities, and erases existing historical identities, with Lady Grey’s history stretching back nearly 170 years.
ℹ Since the end of apartheid 32 years ago, over 1,500 towns have been renamed across South Africa, with major cities like East London and Port Elizabeth already renamed, and about 30 colonial-era monuments removed.
