Ethiopia’s New Coffee Development Package Sets Goal of Producing 2.1 Tonnes per Hectare
The initiative focuses on improving productivity through modern farming practices, strengthening existing coffee farms, and increasing the competitiveness of Ethiopia’s coffee sector in the global market.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the package includes:
▪ improved seed varieties;
▪ integrated soil and irrigation management;
▪ optimized coffee plant density and pruning;
▪ pest control measures;
▪ coffee tree renewal practices.
⁉What will Ethiopia achieve through this package:
introduction of modern production systems across 1.15 million ha of coffee-growing land;
increase productivity per ha by more than 130%;
accelerate the goal of $6 billion in annual coffee exports;
reduction of the productivity gap with leading coffee-producing countries such as Brazil and Vietnam;
improvement of the income of more than 6 million coffee-producing farmers.
