Why Kenyan Tea Farmers' Return to Sudanese Market Will Benefit Kenya's Tea Industry—Expert Explains
The tea trade between the two countries was disrupted in April 2023 due to the conflict that erupted in Sudan.
As Kenya consumes less than 5% of its tea, the return of this key market for premium black tea is critical, William Muroki Githumbi, Chairman of Kagwe Tea Factory, told Sputnik Africa.
"Since the Sudanese market was closed, the price of our tea declined because the Sudanese consume a lot of tea, particularly premium tea. So when the market opens in Sudan, I think the prices will go up," he noted.
