President Bola Tinubu has approved the creation of four new Nigerian Army divisions and the recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel, expanding the service’s divisional structure from eight to 12.
The expansion of Nigeria's armed forces comes as the West African nation grapples with a security environment that has stretched the deployment of servicemen across multiple regions and conflict types. The country continues to face insurgency in the Northeast, while armed banditry and kidnappings persist in the Northwest. Communal clashes and separatist agitations remain a challenge in other parts of the country. Against this backdrop, the government's decision reflects not just a larger force structure but an effort to better align the military's organization with a threat landscape that has become dispersed and complex.Speaking to African Currents, Professor Emmanuel Remi Aiyede, a University of Ibadan scholar of political institutions, governance, and public policy, opines that Nigeria’s military expansion should be hinged on improved security, intelligence, and public confidence. Speaking to African Currents, Professor Emmanuel Remi Aiyede, a University of Ibadan scholar of political institutions, governance, and public policy, opines that Nigeria’s military expansion should be hinged on improved security, intelligence, and public confidence. He further argues that success will require better strategy, inter-agency coordination, accountability, and the welfare of personnel.
"I think that it would be a plus for Nigeria's role in regional peacekeeping, because for you to be able to project your presence externally, you must put your house in order. And this reform is actually part of the effort to enhance their capacity as a regional power [...]. You can't play politics with security [...]. We are looking for results that reflect this. In the improvement in the security situation across the country, and also their demonstrable capacity to work with other security agencies, and more importantly, accountable governance within the security sector, such that we see more transparency, we see more efficient use of resources, and the improvement in intelligence—because without effective intelligence, they won't be able to prevent some of these attacks and threats," Professor Aiyede expressed.
