Cameroon's Milk Paradox: Farmers Produce, Yet the Country Still Imports Dairy — Journalist Explains Why
Cameroon has a deficit of 120,000 tonnes of milk per year, with an internal annual demand exceeding 300,000 tonnes, local media reported last week, adding that this gap can be partially covered by imports of milk, powder, and other dairy products.
The weakness of the cold chain is a major obstacle, which causes part of the milk to be lost before reaching the consumer, Eddy Junior Ayissi told Sputnik Africa.
According to him, the government must:
🟠ensure stable energy in production areas;
🟠link production areas to farmers-run milk preservation centers;
🟠connect farmers to urban markets;
🟠prioritize local milk (canteens, hospitals, etc.).
In 2024, a development plan for the sector was adopted, with a budget of approximately $537.6 million until 2035, the media noted.
