Is Coalition Politics the Future of South Africa?
Sputnik Africa
In this episode, we sit down with Herman Mashaba, president of ActionSA and former mayor of Johannesburg, for a blunt conversation on coalition politics, the failure of the status quo, and what it will take to rebuild South Africa.
Mashaba reflects on his journey from businessman and DA mayoral candidate to founding ActionSA, explaining why he believes both the ANC and DA are unfit for the country’s future. He details ActionSA’s hard conditions for any future coalition: zero tolerance for corruption, constitutional delivery of services to all residents, and a firm stance that undocumented foreign nationals are not welcome in municipalities they govern. He defends his record as Joburg mayor, points to Auditor-General reports, and shares his personal story of rising from rural poverty through self-responsibility and free-market capitalism. The discussion covers practical alternatives to BEE (an “opportunity fund” financed by big business and accountable to Parliament), the need to overhaul labor laws to unlock jobs for young people, professionalizing the public service, and prioritizing South Africans’ material needs over open-ended claims of Ubuntu toward undocumented migrants.Watch this episode for a no-nonsense look at coalition realities, economic reform, immigration enforcement, and whether ActionSA can offer a genuine alternative to the status quo.► Check out all the episodes of Eye of the Storm.► Listen to this podcast on all your favorite platforms: Apple Podcasts | Deezer | Spotify | Pocket Casts | Podcast Addict | Castbox | Afripods

Is Coalition Politics the Future of South Africa?
11:44 10.08.2026 (Updated: 11:45 21.08.2026) In this episode, we sit down with Herman Mashaba, president of ActionSA and former mayor of Johannesburg, for a blunt conversation on coalition politics, the failure of the status quo, and what it will take to rebuild South Africa.
“Two parties that must die cannot coexist with this country: the ANC and the DA. These two parties are not good for the future of my children and my grandchildren.” Mashaba remarked.
The discussion covers practical alternatives to BEE (an “opportunity fund” financed by big business and accountable to Parliament), the need to overhaul labor laws to unlock jobs for young people, professionalizing the public service, and prioritizing South Africans’ material needs over open-ended claims of Ubuntu toward undocumented migrants.
“We will never talk to anyone about coalition until after the elections, when we have the real numbers from the IEC… We will coalesce with any political parties that give us the number to be in government," Mashaba noted.
Watch this episode for a no-nonsense look at coalition realities, economic reform, immigration enforcement, and whether ActionSA can offer a genuine alternative to the status quo.
