Madagascar’s First State-Backed Fuel Shipment to Break Private Import Monopoly: Media
Madagascar is set to receive its first direct diesel shipment from China this week, Energy Minister Radonirina Lucas Rabearimanga said, as quoted by media.
The shipment breaks a 25-year monopoly on fuel imports that was held by a group of private companies, including TotalEnergies SE. With this new approach, the state-owned utility Jirama hopes to maintain a more reliable electricity supply in the coming months.
A second tanker, carrying other petroleum products, is also due to arrive this week. Talks on storage and distribution are already planned at the Galana facility, which is owned by Rubis Energie SAS.
The move follows a law approved by Madagascar's High Constitutional Court on August 3. The law allows the state to directly import petroleum products, while private operators keep their roles in storage and distribution.
