Namibia Honors Anti-Colonial Chief by Naming Military Base After Him: Media

Hundreds of people gathered in the town of Gobabis in eastern Namibia for the renaming ceremony of the 126 battalion after the former Ovambanderu chief Munjuku II Nguvauva, according to local media reports.

"This is indeed a good gesture bestowed on us as the family and the entire Ovambanderu community. This is signifying the bravery of our elders," said Nguvauva's son and the current Ovambanderu chief, as cited by the media.

ℹ Chief Munjuku II—former leader of the Ovambanderu people who inhabit eastern parts of Namibia and western parts of Botswana—supported the first president of Namibia in exile and championed Namibia's independence from South Africa, forming an alliance with SWAPO.
