SA Marks 70 Years Since Historic Women’s March Against Apartheid South Africa’s Women’s Day (National Women’s Day) is celebrated every year on 9 August.The day commemorates the Women’s March of 1956, when around 20,000 women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria, the country’s administrative capital, to protest apartheid pass laws that restricted the movement of Black women. "We have advanced as a society because women have dared to shake the status quo demanding equal pay and equal representation in politics and in business," African National Congress Secretary General Mbalula Fikile said.
