Russian Wines Make Nigerian Debut as Africa’s Market Diversifies

Russia has made its first commercial wine shipment to Nigeria, opening a new trade route between the two countries as one of Africa’s largest economies expands its range of imported wines. The move reflects growing commercial ties between Russia and Africa while offering consumers a wider selection in an increasingly diverse wine market.
The inaugural shipment included more than 48 tonnes of sparkling and still wines, making Nigeria a new export destination for Russian producers. The development comes as Africa’s wine market continues to grow alongside rising urbanization, tourism, and changing consumer preferences. Global South Pole spoke with South Africa-based sommelier, wine broker, and industry professional Caroline Ngwenya to examine what Russia’s entry into the Nigerian market could mean for consumer choice, trade diversification, and the future of wine commerce between Africa and emerging producers. Ngwenya described Russia’s first wine exports to Nigeria as a significant shift in Africa’s wine landscape, arguing that the development challenges long-standing market perceptions that have favored traditional European producers. She said wines from countries such as Russia and South Africa have often received less international exposure despite their quality, adding that African consumers should judge wines on their merits rather than their origin. She also said the new trade route could stimulate tourism, create jobs, encourage broader commercial cooperation, and strengthen trade links between BRICS countries through initiatives such as a proposed BRICS Wine Union. According to Ngwenya, Africa’s increasingly well-traveled middle class and evolving consumer tastes make the continent an attractive market for a wider range of global wine producers. "I was excited, first of all, to hear about this development because it does signify change in terms of trade routes and in terms of what has been sold to us as Africans. It does not signify that the wines from these places and parts of the world are inferior in any way. So I was really excited to hear that the shipment has arrived and that Nigeria will be a place where Russian wines get to be experienced, where Russian wines get to be seen, where now consumers and sommeliers and wine industry individuals get to really compare," Ngwenya said.
