Africa Must Elaborate Unified Strategy to Resolve Illegal Migration Issue: South African FM

After the African Union deferred migration talks at its mid-term review, Ronald Lamola called for a continent-wide conference to address the issue holistically, link it to economic growth and regional integration, and jointly prevent xenophobia.

Unified action is urgent, with nearly 60% of young Africans considering emigration, the minister emphasized.

"Key destination nations such as South Africa, Egypt, and Côte d'Ivoire receive the vast majority of these intra-African migrants," Lamola added, highlighting that African migration remains largely intracontinental.

This diplomatic push follows recent anti-migrant protests across South Africa. The government stated that the protests were entirely peaceful.

President Ramaphosa also pledged to combat illegal immigration, warning that undocumented foreigners strain social services and distort the labor market by offering cheaper labor.
