Social Media Misinformation Drives Moroccan Nationals to Swim to Ceuta, Migrant Says
Many young Moroccans were misled by viral posts falsely claiming a "new Spanish law" granted residency to anyone who swam to the territory, 23-year-old Ahmed, who attempted the crossing in late July, told Sputnik.
Some posts even provided tips on the "best" swimming routes to avoid exhaustion, he noted.
However, Ahmed and many others quickly found the reality drastically different from the promises made online, leaving them stranded without a clear plan.
Ahmed's story confirms the Moroccan Interior Ministry's statement, made on Sunday, that the mass crossings were driven by social media misinformation, human trafficking networks, and a widespread misinterpretation of a Spanish court ruling regarding migrant returns.
