Morocco Takes Major Step Toward Green Energy With $1.5B Casablanca Waste-to-Energy Plant

Project Overview

Developed by a consortium that includes Moroccan energy company Nareva and Japan's Itochu.

Construction will be carried out by Moroccan firm Somagec.

Waste Processing & Energy Output

Processes ~1.5 million tonnes of waste annually.

Generates ~115 megawatts of electricity (from waste, solar power, and landfill gas).

That's enough to supply nearly 1 million people.

Environmental Benefits

Aims to cut methane emissions and reduce pollution.

Will help address long-standing odor and environmental issues at the Mediouna landfill (Morocco's largest).

Timeline

◾Construction is expected to take ~3.5 years.

◾Waste treatment and electricity generation could start 6–10 months before final completion, Kanadevia Inova CEO Bruno-Frédéric Baudouin said.
