Zimbabwe Targets 4,000 MW of New Generation Capacity by 2030
The country is pushing to double its power capacity over the next five years, targeting an additional generation from independent producers, renewable energy, and regional imports to meet rising demand and support economic growth.
Key details:
🟠Total installed capacity could rise from about 3,000 MW to 7,000 MW if planned projects are realized.
🟠New load applications have already reached about 2,500 MW, driven by mining and manufacturing.
🟠Most planned projects are designed to be climate‑proof, reducing reliance on drought‑sensitive hydropower.
🟠The strategy emphasizes diversifying the energy mix and strengthening private-sector participation under the government’s National Development Strategy 2.
"The new demand means that the Zimbabwe capacity developed over more than 50 years has to be doubled in the coming five years," Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company managing director Howard Choga said.
