Guinea Becomes First ECOWAS Member to Opt Out of Single Currency

The West African regional bloc is set to launch a single currency, the eco, in July 2027, but Conakry has officially confirmed it will not be part of it.

Key context:

🟠With 80% of its exports going to Asia, Conakry risks losing key policy levers by tying its national currency, the Guinean franc, to neighboring states, according to French media.

🟠Guinea's decision is reportedly driven by concerns that joining before developing sufficient production capacity could stifle its economy.

ECOWAS is set to meet again in December to resolve outstanding issues, including the future central bank, decision-making rules, and which countries will adopt the eco first.
