Ghana's Cocoa Output to Drop at Least 16% Next Season: Media
Low pod survival rates in Ghana's Western and Western North regions, which produce over half of the country's cocoa, have worsened, according to COCOBOD—Ghana's state-run cocoa board—cited by the media.
Key factors behind the decline:
🟠El Niño conditions and excessive rain in May-June;
🟠The cocoa tree's natural yield cycle, which alternates between higher- and lower-yield years;
🟠Swollen shoot disease and aging cocoa farms;
🟠Illegal gold mining, which leads to farms being taken over by miners.
To limit losses, COCOBOD is rehabilitating infected farms, expanding spraying, and reintroducing a free fertilizer distribution scheme for the 2026/27 season.
