12 Tonnes of Pangolin Scale Trafficked: Nigeria Repatriates Chinese Suspect
The Nigeria Police Force reported arresting and repatriating Chinese fugitive Cai Jinlian to his home country to face charges for trafficking endangered wildlife.
Jinlian was charged with smuggling pangolin scales from Nigeria to China between November 2018 and April 2019. His two accomplices were convicted and sentenced to over 14 years in prison in December 2020.
Hunt Across Borders
An arrest warrant was issued on March 24, 2020, followed by an INTERPOL Red Notice on May 10, 2020. Intelligence later placed him in Nigeria around 2023, moving between Delta and Plateau States.
Arrest and Repatriation
On July 18, INTERPOL's National Central Bureau in Abuja arrested Jinlian. He was repatriated to Shanghai this past Wednesday under a bilateral police cooperation agreement between Nigeria and China.
Inspector-General of Police IGP Olutunji Rilwan Disu commended the team and reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to combating wildlife trafficking and transnational crime through international cooperation.
