Tanzania Takes Step Toward Cryptocurrency Regulation: Media

What’s Covered Under the New Framework?

The Bank of Tanzania (BoT) has completed an assessment of the virtual assets sector and developed a regulatory concept that includes:

cryptocurrencies,

stablecoins,

non-fungible tokens (NFTs),

other blockchain-based digital assets.

What's Next? The proposal, submitted to the Ministry of Finance, will now undergo policy and legal processes before becoming law, local media reported.

The Central Bank’s Goals: BoT Governor Emmanuel Tutuba stated that the new framework is designed to achieve three main objectives:

Provide legal clarity for users and businesses

Strengthen consumer protections in the digital space

Safeguard financial stability across the broader economy

Stablecoins vs. a Future CBDC

The virtual assets initiative is separate from the BoT's ongoing central bank digital currency (CBDC) study, which began in 2025 to assess impact on the financial ecosystem.

Unlike volatile cryptocurrencies, a CBDC would be centrally issued and backed, while stablecoins maintain value by linking to underlying assets.
