African Standby Force Plays Crucial Role in Resolving Security Challenges Across Africa: Ethiopian Military Expert
Ethiopia has urged the immediate activation of the African Standby Force (ASF), according to a communiqué adopted by the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) on the operationalization of the force.
Commenting on the communiqué, Demile Mollaw, Deputy Commandant for Curriculum Development at the Defense Command College Education, told Sputnik Africa that the establishment of the ASF is highly important.
"This initiative to bring about collective efforts [...] What is going on in a certain country may not be confined to the boundary of some country [...]."
ℹThe ASF is a continental peacekeeping force established under the direction of the AU. It is composed of military, police, and civilian contingents and is designed for deployment in times of crisis across Africa. The Force's headquarters are located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Initially set for operational readiness by 2010, the ASF has since missed that target deadline.
