'African Countries Are Always Ones Carrying Burden' of Int'l Institutions' Decisions: Tanzanian Political Analyst
A US federal court has ordered South Sudan and the Bank of South Sudan to pay $1.02 billion to Qatar National Bank after enforcing an international arbitration award over unpaid wartime loans. The judgment stems from a 2018 loan agreement made during South Sudan’s civil war and includes unpaid principal, interest, and legal costs.
Commenting on this, Leonard Chakupewa Soza told Sputnik Africa that some countries are using legal systems and laws to advance their own interests.
"[...] Africa’s ability to defend itself in such matters remains limited."
The institutions like the ICC have also faced accusations of bias in handling cases, he noted, especially when comparing African cases with those involving other regions.
"At the same time, these major countries themselves must also examine how they handle cases of this kind because there have been many complaints."
