Zimbabwe is positioning itself for a new phase of economic development, with two major moves potentially reshaping the country’s industrial future.
First we are joined by senior economist Mishek Ugaro to discuss the country’s ascension into the BRICS-founded New Development Bank as a borrowing member.
This move opens up access to an alternative source of long-term development finance at a time when Zimbabwe continues to deal with a substantial infrastructure and debt burden.
Mishek Ugaro argues that recent economic developments in Zimbabwe represent a full turnaround rather than a temporary improvement.
“It's actually a full turnaround over the last five years, Zimbabwe has been the fastest-growing economy in sub-Saharan Africa,” Ugaro says.
Later in the show we look at Zimbabwe’s growing lithium industry and the commissioning of a $400 million lithium sulfate processing plant.
In this discussion political analyst Lazarus Sauti says the real test is whether mineral wealth improves the lives of Zimbabweans, particularly those living in resource-rich communities that have often remained poor despite the wealth beneath their feet.
“The goal is not only to industrialize but also to lift the lives of ordinary citizens from abject poverty to prosperity,” Sauti argues.
