Algeria Elects First Woman as President of National People’s Assembly: Media

Khalida Boufedeche secured 302 votes in a secret ballot held on Tuesday evening, winning the role of APN President – the lower house of Parliament – for a five-year term.

Who is the woman behind this milestone?

Born in 1982, from Algiers province

Trained as an allergist doctor – earned her medical degree in 2008 and specialized in 2019

Political backdrop

🟠Her party, the National Liberation Front (FLN), won the most seats in the July 2 legislative elections – 91 out of 407.

🟠Despite this milestone, women remain vastly underrepresented in the assembly, holding only 25 seats – just about 6% of the total.
