Malawi Installs Pioneering Battery System to Stabilize Power Grid: State Company
The facility, which was switched on over the weekend in Lilongwe, is the only utility‑scale battery storage system of its kind in Southern Africa outside South Africa and Namibia, the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi said.
The 20‑megawatt project, funded by the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet, is designed to reduce blackouts and improve power reliability across the country.
Key details:
🟠Hydropower reliance: Malawi relies on hydropower for about two‑thirds of its electricity, but climate shocks—including Cyclone Freddy and an expected strong El Niño—have threatened supply.
🟠Impact: The battery system will help connect 600,000 additional households and cut blackouts from four hours to less than two hours.
🟠Expansion: Malawi plans to add three more storage facilities with a combined capacity of 60 MW in two other cities.
"This project is about providing the steady, high‑quality power that our hospitals need to save lives, our schools need to educate our children, and our businesses need to thrive," Energy Minister Jean Mathanga said.
