Africa’s Next Power Play Lies at Sea - Researcher
"Maritime sovereignty is far more than protecting territorial waters. So it’s the ability of the state to govern its maritime domain, which means protecting trade, resources, and infrastructure and enforcing its own laws. So as we all know, the world is becoming increasingly multipolar, and in such a world, sovereignty means engaging international partners, but most importantly, from a position of capability and strategic choice rather than dependence."
On #GlobalSouthPole, Dr. Joan Swart, researcher in strategic studies at Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Military Science, South Africa, explains why Africa’s maritime future depends on more than acquiring naval vessels. She argues that stronger institutions, long-term strategy, indigenous innovation, and deeper cooperation among African countries can help safeguard trade, strengthen the blue economy, and position the continent to engage global partners from a position of confidence rather than dependence.
