Zimbabwe to Distribute 35,000 Tractors to Modernize Rural Agriculture: Media
Following earlier plans announced under the National Development Strategy 2, the government is rolling out supplies of tractors to every village in the country to boost productivity and strengthen national food security, local media reported.
As part of this effort, President Mnangagwa will officially launch the mechanization program, which aims to transition traditional hoe-and-plough farming into market-oriented Village Business Units (VBUs)*.
On the rollout so far, media quoted Mechanization, Water, and Rural Resettlement Minister Anxious Masuka saying that:
The national tractor count has more than doubled, rising from 7,500 in 2017 to 17,800 currently.
An additional 5,000 tractors are expected soon.
The government is working with 11 dealers to secure and distribute the equipment.
*VBUs allow villagers to collectively produce and market goods, creating jobs and boosting household incomes at the grassroots level.
