Russian Ebola Vaccine Shows Efficacy Against Bundibugyo Strain: Research Center
A Russian vaccine has demonstrated high immunogenicity and protective properties against the Bundibugyo Ebola strain—the variant driving the current outbreak in the DR Congo, Denis Logunov, director of Russia's Gamaleya Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology, told Russian media.
Key findings:
🟠Tests were conducted on simplified virus models (surrogate variants) and showed strong results that correlate well with the real pathogen.
🟠Researchers now need access to the actual circulating strain from Africa to continue development.
"If Africa shows genuine interest and is ready to provide the pathogen, the Gamaleya Center is fully prepared to conduct the research," Logunov said.
On July 10, during a visit to Burundi, Russian FM Sergey Lavrov said Moscow is ready to scale up industrial production of the vaccine once biomaterials are received.
