Addis Ababa and Beijing recently signed a technical cooperation agreement covering capacity building, weather and climate prediction, and disaster risk reduction, Asaminew Teshome, deputy director general of the Ethiopian Meteorological Institute, said.
The partnership is deploying AI, machine learning, and other new technologies to improve the accuracy of weather and climate data.
"We are living in the era of AI and modern technologies. Deploying and utilizing these new technologies is very important to improve and make weather and climate information more accurate," Asaminew said.
Ethiopia is one of the first countries to receive China's "Mazu" meteorological early warning system, with local experts having received advanced training.
"We are now operationalizing the Mazu system to generate real-time and short-term forecasts," he added.
