The typhoon made landfall in Guangdong province early Sunday, packing wind speeds of up to 45 meters per second (equivalent to a Category 4 hurricane).

While it has since weakened to a severe tropical storm, its effects are expected to persist across five neighboring provinces over the next three days.

Authorities have set up temporary shelters and distributed 25,000 units of emergency supplies to affected communities.
