Comoros' Historic Site Joins UNESCO World Heritage List
The Medinas of the Historic Sultanates of the Comoros have become the country's first historic site to receive this status, according to the UNESCO.
Key facts about the medinas:
🟠 Six Historic Cities: The designation covers the ancient urban centers of Moroni, Ntsudjini, Itsandra, Ikoni, Moutsamoudou, and Domoni as a single serial property.
🟠 Ancient Origins: Emerging by the 11th century, the medinas feature dense stone architecture, royal palaces, and mosques.
🟠 Cultural Fusion: Their unique layout blends Eastern African, Arab-Muslim, Malagasy, and European influences, merging local customs with Islamic traditions.
The UNESCO recognized the site for preserving the archipelago’s cultural heritage and showcasing outstanding island urban architecture, the organization noted.
