Kenyan Police Thwart al-Shabaab* Terrorist Attack in Mandera County, One Injured: Authorities
The attack occurred on Friday evening when suspected al-Shabaab militants targeted the Fino security camp in the northeastern county, where security forces quickly repelled the assault, the police announced.
Key details:
🟠A student was shot in the abdomen during the attack and is in stable condition after being rushed to hospital.
🟠A similar assault was reported in Arabia about an hour later, with heavy gunfire also heard in the Asharaf area.
🟠Security operations are ongoing to clear the area.
The border region of Mandera, as well as other parts of northern Kenya, has experienced repeated attacks by al-Shabaab since Kenya deployed troops to Somalia in 2011 as part of an AU peace support mission, later operating under a bilateral mandate.
The latest incident comes amid heightened security following threats by the militant group to carry out retaliatory attacks unless Kenya withdraws its forces.
