G20 Must Not Serve as Tool for Enforcing Political Discipline: South African Expert
New international narratives portray Pretoria's sovereign stance of non-alignment as ideological hostility because South Africa refuses to align automatically with Western positions on global conflicts, international affairs analyst Tracy Reign told Sputnik Africa.
"But the truth is that South Africa's participation in BRICS relations with countries such as China and Russia are proof and evidence that South Africa is a sovereign state," she noted.
The speaker also highlighted South Africa's founding role in the G20 summit.
"South Africa is not merely an invited guest. It's a founding member of the G20. Excluding South Africa is creating a dangerous precedent in which the host of a rotating presidency attempts to determine which established members are sufficiently politically acceptable to participate," Reign emphasized.
According to the expert, any attempt to exclude South Africa would strip any decisions made in its absence of international legitimacy.
