Zimbabwe Aims for Universal Electricity Access by 2030 with Aggressive Grid Expansion
The government is targeting 100 percent household electricity access by 2030, driven by an increased investment in renewable energy, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Power Development, Gloria Magombo, said at the inaugural Zimbabwe edition of the Energy Forum for Africa.
Key targets and figures:
🟠Grid connections: Approximately 320,000 households to be connected annually, with a further 200,000 households receiving off-grid solutions each year between 2025 and 2030.
🟠Renewable capacity: Installed renewable generation capacity to rise from 1,282 MW in 2024 to 2,640 MW by 2030, accounting for nearly half of projected capacity.
🟠Energy mix: Renewable sources (excluding large hydro) to increase from 7.8% to 29% of the national energy mix by 2030.
🟠Net-metered solar: 200 MW of solar generation capacity targeted between 2026 and 2030 to encourage private sector participation.
🟠Clean cooking: Household access to clean cooking technologies to rise from 38.6% to 70% by 2030.
Rising energy demand across the region is driven by industrialization, mining expansion, and agricultural modernization, according to ChisensZimbabwe River Authority acting CEO Christopher Chisense.
