“The situation today is extremely uncertain and volatile, and it seems consistently a lack of strategic leadership on some of these issues that we are facing today,” Van Heerden observes.
The discussion also explores South Africa’s image as a human rights champion in light of recent unrest, the realities of immigration and exploitation in the economy, and what the country could look like in ten years if populist rhetoric and division prevail.
“Anyone and everyone must agree that where we find ourselves today as South Africa is eminently better than the pre-1990 on all socioeconomic indicators,” Dr. van Heerden asserts while stressing the urgent need for collective leadership and a new social compact.
