SA & Russia Fight in the Same Corner for G20 Credibility
10:03 22.07.2026 (Updated: 16:30 24.07.2026) South Africa has been iced out of the G20, the Russian Foreign Ministry says that this exclusion will make decision-making difficult. To explain what all of this means for the geopolitics of South Africa and the African continent, political analyst and researcher Gustavo de Carvalho joins the show.
Since President Trump boycotted the G20 leaders' summit in Johannesburg last November, South Africa has been progressively frozen out of the G20 process.
SA was barred from this year's summit and denied accreditation for its finance minister and reserve bank governor at G20 meetings in Washington.
Now the Russian Foreign Ministry has officially said the consensus decision-making at this year’s summit will be made difficult by South Africa’s exclusion.
In this Nnete Fela Show, Gustavo de Carvalho, from the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), explains what has happened in this saga, why it matters, and what it reveals about the G20's credibility as a forum for global economic governance.
He argues that this exclusion sets a precedent that is detrimental to the governance of the G20 as an institution and that this is not the first credibility problem for the forum as well.
“I think it certainly creates a type of precedent that is particularly worrying about the overall governance of the G20. Certainly, this is not the first and the only challenge that the G20 faces,” De Carvalho says.
What other problems do you think the G20 has?
