EAC to Launch Uganda Virus Research Institute as Regional Center of Excellence in Virology
The Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) will serve as a regional hub, strengthening EAC partner states’ capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to Ebola, Marburg, and other emerging viral diseases through:
▪ advanced virology research;
▪ specialized laboratory training;
▪ disease surveillance and diagnostics;
▪ knowledge sharing.
"By investing in centers of excellence, we are building a stronger, more coordinated regional health system that can better prevent, detect, and respond to disease outbreaks for the benefit of all East Africans," EAC Deputy Secretary General Aguer Ariik Malueth said.
Ahead of Wednesday’s launch, UVRI will host a scientific symposium bringing together scientists, public health experts, policymakers, and development partners to discuss emerging diseases, regional laboratory systems, and pandemic preparedness.
