South Africa Sticks to Nuclear Power Expansion Plan Despite Recent Contamination Incidents at Koeberg NPP: Energy Minister
South Africa remains firmly committed to its nuclear energy goals, with power generation proceeding exactly as planned, Minister of Electricity and Energy, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, told media.
Speaking about recent incidents involving elevated radiation levels at the 42-year-old Koeberg plant near Cape Town, the minister confirmed that airborne contamination detected in late June and early July was completely contained.
Consequently, both Koeberg units have been cleared to continue operations for an additional 20 years.
Looking ahead, the national Integrated Resource Plan targets the addition of 5,200 MW of nuclear capacity by 2040—an expansion that is crucial for diversifying away from aging coal plants and mitigating scheduled power outages.
