Eritrea's Scientists Master Genomic Sequencing to Improve Patient Care – WHO
Teams at Eritrea's National Health Laboratory are building genomic sequencing capacity to improve disease surveillance and guide public health interventions, the WHO Africa regional office announced.
Key details:
🟠Technology impact: Sequencing enables scientists to analyze pathogens in depth, detect antimicrobial resistance, and identify organisms behind recurring infections.
🟠Training: Since 2024, 15 professionals have been trained with WHO support. Initial work focuses on malaria, urinary tract infections, and neonatal sepsis.
🟠Local impact: Sequencing allows better understanding of the organisms that cause diseases and identifies resistance to certain treatments, according to molecular biology specialist Mansoura Saeed.
"Data produced in laboratories tell us which microbes are circulating, help us identify treatment resistance, and enable us to make better decisions to protect populations. This is how we strengthen epidemic preparedness and health security in Africa," WHO Regional Director Dr. Mohamed Janabi said.
