Archaeological Treasures Unearthed in Ancient Libyan City of Apollonia: Department of Antiquities

Researchers have discovered a well‑preserved ancient theater, a rare Greek racecourse, and several sacred complexes in eastern Libya, the country's Department of Antiquities announced.

Lead archaeologist Vincent Michel described the racecourse as "an exceptional scientific discovery" and unique in the Cyrenaica region, with no known equivalent in the Mediterranean.

Apollonia, near present‑day Sousse, was developed as the port of the Greek colony of Cyrene in the 7th century BC and later became a key Mediterranean trading hub.
