'There Are Not Two Captains on Boat': Ibrahim Traoré Clarifies Stance on Power Transition
During a meeting with national forces in the Yaadga region, Burkina Faso’s President Ibrahim Traoré sought to dispel speculation comparing the current political situation to the events of 1987, which resulted in the assassination of Thomas Sankara and Blaise Compaoré’s rise to power.
"When I left with my men, I was at the forefront; there wasn't just one soldier in front of me," Traoré said, speaking about the coup he led in October 2022.
He argued that the situations are incomparable, noting that he did not seclude himself in a villa to issue orders from afar, only to appear boastfully before the RTB that evening.
The president urged against drawing false parallels, asserting that “there is neither number one, nor number two, nor any number at all.”
Traoré described his role as "a mission," with his team "following" it.
