Cameroon Restores State Authority in Major Mining Sector Reforms: Ministry
Cameroon reached a historic turning point in 2025, joining the ranks of mining-producing nations with the commissioning of five major projects, Minister Calistus Gentry said in his keynote address.
The projects include the Bipindi–Grand Zambi Iron Ore, Kribi–Lobé Iron Ore, Minim-Martap Bauxite, Bidzar Marble, and Colomine Gold projects.
Key measures under the new Mining Code, as outlined by Gentry, include:
▪ Mandatory ~$113,000 environmental rehabilitation bond per site;
▪ 51% Cameroonian shareholding requirement for semi-mechanized mining permits;
▪ Fiscal regime: 25% composite tax, 5% export duty, 1% Mining Policy Implementation Fund contribution;
▪ Minimum monthly production thresholds: 5kg (15 bowls), 7kg (20 bowls), 10kg (30 bowls);
▪ Mandatory migration to closed-circuit leaching technology within six months.
Designed to strengthen traceability, combat fraud and promote responsible mining, the reforms also seek to ensure that mineral wealth benefits citizens while protecting the environment and safeguarding the interests of future generations.
