Uganda's Ebola Outbreak Nears End as 42-Day Countdown Begins After Last Case Tests Negative: WHO
The 42-day period, equivalent to two maximum incubation periods for the Bundibugyo virus, is the required phase before an outbreak can be declared over, provided no new cases are detected.
"This milestone reflects the dedication of Uganda's leadership, health workers, case investigation teams, communities and partners who have worked hard to interrupt transmission," WHO Representative in Uganda Kasonde Mwinga said .
Uganda declared the outbreak on May 15, 2026. As of Thursday, 20 confirmed cases and two deaths have been reported — 15 cases imported from the DRC and five locally acquired. All 836 contacts have been followed up, and surveillance has been strengthened across 36 high-risk districts and 38 points of entry.
