Unique Monkey With Bright Pinkish-Orange Lips Found in DRC Recognized as New Species: Study

The newly identified Colobus congoensis (C. congoensis) inhabits the eastern Lomami River basin and adjacent Lualaba River basin, the researchers revealed in a study.

"The first evidence of the new species came in 2008 [...]. Although the photograph revealed only part of the animal, the field team strongly suspected that this was not any of the monkey species they already knew from the region."

The orange facial pattern is unique compared with other Colobus species, according to the paper.

"Protection of Lomami National Park, within which most of the C. congoensis range occurs, and engagement of local communities in not hunting the species are the most important actions needed to ensure the conservation of C. congoensis."
