'We Can Now Test for Marburg and Mpox Using Our Own Capacity': Ethiopian Public Health Institute
On the occasion of the institute’s Diamond Jubilee, marking its 100th anniversary, its Director General Dr. Mesay Hailu, stated during a press briefing that the institute is one of the leading centers of excellence on the continent and among those recognized by the Africa CDC.
The Deputy Director General of the institute, Dr. Saro Abdella, for her part, recalled that during the COVID period, samples used to be sent to South Africa and other foreign countries.
“But now, we are able to conduct Marburg and Mpox tests — which require even higher laboratory capacity than COVID — using our own resources, our own experts, and within our own country,” she said, emphasizing that this goes beyond laboratory independence and is strongly linked to national sovereignty.
The Deputy Director General pointed out that Russia played a significant role in the development of laboratory services in Ethiopia.
According to Sputnik Africa’s correspondent, more than 20 studies and research papers will be presented during the institute’s three-day Diamond Jubilee celebration starting Thursday, and the 5th Health Science Conference will also be held.
