Nigeria Increases Financial Assistance for Cancer Patients Through Targeted Health Programs: Media
The government has introduced additional measures to ease the cost of cancer treatment, including dedicated health funds and expanded insurance support, media say.
Financial Support for Patients
Director-General of the institute Usman Malami was quoted as saying that the government has set up two key funds to help patients access care:
The Catastrophic Health Fund helps cover cancer prevention, diagnosis, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy for eligible patients.
The National Cancer Health Fund, managed by the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment, provides assistance to cancer patients who cannot afford treatment.
Reducing Reliance on Imported Medicines
A new initiative—the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain—aims to boost local production of cancer drugs, Malami added. This is expected to:
Lower treatment costs
Improve drug availability
New Cancer Research Opportunities
For the first time, Nigeria has launched three immunotherapy clinical studies, giving patients access to advanced cancer medicines that were previously unavailable in the country.
“Within the next year, you will hear more about it,” Special Adviser on Research and Innovation to the Minister of State for Health Lolade Adewale stressed.
