Zimbabwe Approves Summer Cropping Plan to Shield Farmers From Predicted El Niño: Agriculture Ministry
The Plan Includes:
🟠Grow climate-resilient crops – Farmers are encouraged to plant traditional grains in suitable regions and adopt climate-smart seed varieties.
🟠Build grain reserves – The government is focusing on strengthening the strategic grain reserve, while farmers are urged to store food at the household level.
🟠Protect livestock – Measures include improved feed management, disease control, vaccination, supplementary feeding, and better nutrition.
"In terms of our interventions, it is to ensure that farmers are also protecting their livestock," Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanization & Water Resources Development Permanent Secretary Obert Jiri was quoted by state media as saying.
🟠Secure funding early – Farmers are advised to arrange their financing options as soon as possible.
🟠Strengthen early warning systems – Coordination and monitoring will be improved across all provinces to provide timely weather updates.
🟠Expand irrigation – The government sees irrigation as the long-term solution to reduce dependence on unpredictable rainfall.
"It is irrigation that will allow us to delink our production from the weather."
