AfDB Approves $66 Million for 500MW Solar Plant & Battery Storage in Egypt
The package will support the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the 500-megawatt Dandara photovoltaic plant with the 100MWh integrated battery storage in Qena Governorate, southern Egypt.
Who's Funding It? Total project cost is estimated at over $290 million.
$46 million from the AfDB's own resources
$20 million in concessional funding from the Climate Investment Funds' Clean Technology Fund
Additional debt from other development finance institutions
What Will It Deliver? Once fully operational by early 2028, the plant is expected to generate 1,373 GWh of clean electricity annually. The battery system will:
▪supply renewable power during peak evening demand;
▪mitigate solar variability;
▪reduce annual CO₂ emissions by approximately 500,000 tonnes;
▪create about 2,500 construction jobs.
Who Will Buy the Power?
The Aluminum Company of Egypt—one of Africa's largest aluminum producers—will be the sole off-taker under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement.
