New Mollusk Species Named After Cape Verdean Goalkeeper Vozinha: Researchers
The red coloration of a tiny sea slug "recalls the feat" of the goalkeeper against Spain during the 2026 World Cup, according to a study by Cape Verdean and Spanish researchers.
This inspired the scientists to name the species Aldisa vozinha.
The mollusk's red hue is reportedly reminiscent of the Spanish national team, against whom Vozinha saved every shot before becoming a social media sensation.
Although the species was initially discovered in the Caribbean Sea in 2001, it was not fully studied until 2026, according to researchers.
Naming species after footballers is not unprecedented in science: in 2019, one of the same researchers named a new marine snail in honor of the captain of the Costa Rican team.
