In this episode of Eye of the Storm, we sit down with Roshan Dadoo, a veteran activist and key figure in the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) coalition in South Africa, for a critical conversation on the intersection of human rights and South Africa’s complicity in the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
Dadoo, whose decades of experience date back to the anti-apartheid struggle, provides a chilling assessment of the current situation in Palestine. She draws direct parallels between the 1948 origins of both the Israeli and apartheid South African regimes, noting that the modern occupation of Palestine, defined by advanced surveillance, fragmentation, and systemic violence, has surpassed the horrors of the system her own country once fought to dismantle.
The discussion pivots to South Africa’s landmark case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). While Dadoo commends the government for this moral and legal milestone, she argues that it is incomplete.
“South Africa [came] from the same origins and is part of the same system of imperialist oppression and repression in the peripheries to suit the former colonial powers,” Dadoo remarks.
The episode unpacks the loopholes in trade regulation and the influence of corporations like Glencore and why South Africa’s coal exports, which have surged to power Israel’s grid, weapons manufacturing, and high-tech surveillance systems, are a direct violation of the country’s obligations under the Genocide Convention. “It’s only one tool and one way in which international support can be demonstrated, and fortunately there have been other countries that have signed onto the case since then, but it requires implementation,” Dadoo notes regarding the ICJ process.
Listen to this episode to understand the mechanics of international complicity and the power of collective activism in the Global South.
